S.H.E.L.L. Terminology

Below is a description of the New York State standardized terminology used during emergencies:

SHELTER-IN-PLACE Used inside the building when it is safer inside than outside (e.g., severe weather).
HOLD-IN-PLACE Used to limit movement during short-term emergencies like maintenance or medical issues.
EVACUATE Moving students and staff from the building to a safe predetermined shelter site.
LOCKOUT Secures the building during incidents nearby in the community, but not an imminent threat.
LOCKDOWN Used for immediate threats of violence. Staff and students move to a safe area and remain quiet.

Preparation

  1. Ensure contact and pick-up information is up to date.
  2. Keep medical records and medications current with the nurse.
  3. Review emergency responses with your child to ease anxiety.
  4. Report suspicious activity: "See Something, Say Something!"

In an Emergency

  • DO NOT COME TO THE SCHOOL until notified.
  • Monitor the school messenger system and website.
  • Students must be signed out by an authorized person with ID.
  • Safety is the first priority; listen for official instructions.
